VESTIBULAR_1 (2020): Altering Aesthetic Perception through Sensory Conflict
VESTIBULAR_1 (2020) is an immersive audiovisual installation by Albert Barqué-Duran and Marc Marzenit that disrupts vestibular processing to explore how sensory conflict reshapes aesthetic perception. Presented in total darkness, the work uses high-intensity light and sound patterns that persist in the retina and auditory system to induce illusory self-motion and challenge the coherence of bodily and spatial awareness. Grounded in research from cognitive neuroscience, the piece investigates the role of vestibular signals in the perception of the self and the external world, questioning how altered multisensory integration influences our interpretation of artistic stimuli. By presenting the audience with conflicting sensory input, VESTIBULAR_1 reveals the instability of perception and the plasticity of aesthetic experience when the brain’s integrative processes are disrupted. The installation offers a provocative framework for understanding perception not as a passive reception of the world, but as an active construction—one that can be manipulated, fractured, and reassembled through carefully designed sensory interventions. The project has been exhibited in Ars Electronia, Cosmocaixa, Gray Area - San Francisco, V2_, and many more.
