My Artificial Muse (2016) – Pioneering Creative Agency through Human–AI Collaboration
My Artificial Muse (2016) is an award-winning, research project that investigates the role of early Artificial Intelligence in contemporary artistic creation, and the ethics of computational creativity and generative AI. Developed by Albert Barqué-Duran, Mario Klingemann, and Marc Marzenit, and premiered at Sónar+D 2016, the project has been exhibited globally as a landmark exploration at the intersection of art, science, and emerging technologies. The performance stages a live collaboration between human and machine: a neural network generates a classical-style artwork, which is then interpreted through live oil painting by the human artist. Simultaneously, the AI system visualizes its generative process, exposing the mechanics of computational creativity. A generative soundscape—responsive to the artist's movements via embodied sensors—completes the multisensory narrative. Each iteration is singular: a new "AI Muse" is created, interpreted, and sonically embodied in real time.
